WRMG Huddersfield Mini Rugby Festival Targets Record Attendance

The WRMG (West Riding Motor Group) Huddersfield Mini Rugby Festival is appealing for Yorkshire sports enthusiasts to help them make this year’s event the best ever.

A second weekend of junior rugby at Lockwood Park in Huddersfield takes place on Sunday April 20th 2008. It will feature more than 450 young rugby players from 28 teams from across Yorkshire and beyond.

And after last month’s first weekend of youth rugby attracted more than 600 spectators it is hoped that the total attendance could swell to more than 2000 for the first time in the festival’s history.

Organiser Dave Beal said, “Last month we had one of the best mini rugby festivals Yorkshire has ever seen, and April’s event will be even better. It’s been a real team effort with committed volunteers and generous local businesses like WRMG coming together to inspire local youngsters to get out and play rugby. We’d love as many people as possible to come down and enjoy the competition.”

The weekend event will feature teams from the under 10s, under 11s and under 12s. Only five years old, the festival celebrates the region’s tradition for junior rugby in the town where it started in 1968.

WRMG marketing manager Danny Holden said, “It is great to be involved with people who are so passionate about their sport. The first weekend was a huge success and the children taking part had a great time. We hope that the festival will inspire a thriving youth academy here in Huddersfield and a golden future for rugby in Yorkshire.”
